What is Brazilian naturalization and why is it so important
Obtaining Brazilian naturalization is the dream of many foreigners living in Brazil who wish to acquire and exercise full citizenship rights — to vote, get a Brazilian passport, travel to 169 countries without a visa, and live safely in Brazil.
Therefore, before achieving this great dream, it is very important to understand that each type of naturalization requires a specific list of documents.
Understand how a small mistake, such as:
• a expired document, like a criminal record
• or a document that does not have the correct sworn translation
Can delay the process for months or even lead to denial/rejection.
💡 Tip: The sworn translation must be done by a sworn translator in Brazil.
Serian Vistos closely monitors all updates in your naturalization process on a weekly basis, helping you gather all the necessary documentation to submit your process quickly and efficiently.
📑 List of Required Documents for Brazilian Naturalization
Here is the official and updated list of documents required for each type of Brazilian naturalization. There are four types of Brazilian naturalization:
• Ordinary
• Provisional
• Extraordinary
• Special
These are official information, as they are on the Brazilian Government website, complying with the current requirements of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security.
1. List of required documents for the four types of Brazilian naturalization
The following documents are mandatory for any type of Brazilian naturalization:
• CRNM (National Migratory Registration Card) valid – Valid identification document of the foreigner, also known as RNM or RNE, it is the foreigner’s ID in Brazil. ATTENTION: this document cannot be expired.
• Passport: Your country of origin’s passport can be expired, as this will not be a problem for the process. ATTENTION: The Ministry of Justice only accepts this document if it is completely scanned (all pages, including blank ones) in a single PDF file.
• Valid CPF in Brazil — ATTENTION: The CPF must be regular with the Federal Revenue.
• Birth or marriage certificate – If this document is foreign, it must be translated by a sworn translator in Brazil.
• Updated proof of address — The Ministry of Justice requires the naturalization applicant to present proof of address for the last 4 years while living in Brazil, as well as the current year’s address. (Be sure to gather proof of address from when you started living in Brazil, so you are ready for the naturalization process. 😉)
• CTPS - Work card – digital in the GOV BR app, or physical (all pages scanned).
• Criminal Record CASIER JUDICIAIRE DCPJ from your country of origin —
ATTENTION:
— In the case of Haitians, the criminal record bonne vie et moeurs (good conduct and morals) is not accepted by the Ministry of Justice and Federal Police. Only the CASIER JUDICIAIRE DCPJ is accepted.
— This criminal record must be legalized / apostilled in the country of origin and must also contain the Brazilian embassy seal (this seal is required only for countries that are not part of the Hague Convention).
Note: Haiti, for example, is not part of the Hague Convention, so the Brazilian embassy seal is mandatory on the criminal record.

• Sworn translation of the criminal record from the country of origin — done by a sworn translator in Brazil
• Portuguese Certificate: The Portuguese certificate must be recognized by MEC and accepted by the Federal Police. Migration Law 13.445/2017 establishes that the foreigner must be able to communicate in Portuguese, and the Portuguese certificate is one way to prove this ability.
ATTENTION: In case of an online Portuguese course, it is required to have an in-person exam or evaluation activity. Certificates issued solely through 100% online courses (without any in-person activity) will not be accepted for the naturalization process.
💡 Tip: Celpe-Bras is not the only way to prove Portuguese proficiency for Brazilian naturalization. At Serian Vistos, you have 2 excellent options to obtain your Portuguese Certificate:
Option 01: Take an in-person oral exam, with a written component, in São Paulo – SP, which occurs once a month throughout the year. The exam lasts about 2 hours, and the teacher administering it will help evaluate if you can communicate in Portuguese.
And the best part is that the certificate is ready 10 days after the exam, giving you agility with Serian Vistos in your naturalization process.
Option 02: You can take a 30-day online course, with a final in-person exam. Classes are Monday through Thursday, 2 hours each, offered in morning, afternoon, and evening shifts. You can choose the shift that suits you best.
• The in-person exam takes place in some cities in Brazil. Contact Serian Vistos to find out which city is closest to you.
ATTENTION: Attendance at classes is mandatory, there are activities that must be completed and submitted, and after the classes end, you must schedule the exam with the institution's secretary. Serian Vistos will assist you throughout this process.
• The Portuguese certificate will be sent 30 days after passing the in-person exam, along with the declaration.
